The Anti-Impermanence Root

Claim (candidate)§

Two errors already load-bearing in this corpus — the reification of money (the coordination protocol treated as a possessable asset) and the causal-time stance in organizational change (becoming treated as a sequence of static states) — share a common root without being the same thing. The root is:

reification, the ontological substitution of a thing for a relation (the noun for the verb), recruited in the service of defeating impermanence.

The two errors differ only in what gets frozen. Money-as-store-of-value freezes a coordination flow into a stored stock. Causal time freezes becoming into a sequence of states. In both, a static, possessable object is substituted for a dynamic process, and in both the motive is the same: to secure something against loss by removing it from the current of time.

The sharp form§

The “store of value” error is causal time performed on value. A store of value freezes a coordination flow into a stored stock precisely to make it “keep” — to lift it out of the river. Bergson’s swimmer cannot step into the same river twice; the hoarder is trying to. The treasury-balance error is the same move on the commons: capacity-to-deliver (a flow disposition) frozen into balance (a stock). This is why the two failing treasury proposals share not only the already-named security→balance relocation, but a common temporal signature — treating the future as something to be secured by accumulation or binding rather than served by secured capacity.

The affective substrate§

Purser grounds causal time explicitly in temporal alienation: time as the devouring enemy (tempus edax rerum; Father Time’s scythe), and management as the attempt to bring it under control. The affect underneath control-of-time is fear of loss.

This corpus already carries the tell. In the money ontology, money “feels like a thing” because of the metaphors that cluster on it — weight, solidity, security, ground. That is not a neutral cognitive slip; it is a security-seeking, fear-quieting pull. The store-of-value narrative sells the feeling of security to a nervous system primed to buy it.

This supplies a candidate mechanism for a puzzle already posed: why the bad ontology recurs “regardless of the intentions of the actors.” The standing answer is bad ontology, not bad actors. The affective root goes one layer under: the ontology is near-irresistible because it is downstream of a widely, somatically entrained fear of loss. Fear explains the ontology’s stickiness and recurrence.

Two hard constraints (register discipline)§

1. Strictly descriptive. A fear-explanation of why people reify is not an argument that reification is wrong — that would be a genetic fallacy, and it would re-open the seam from the other side. The wrongness stays where it already sits: a category error that produces enclosure and toll as structural consequences. Fear explains stickiness and recurrence; it never does the normative work. (This is the same line already drawn as “a story of a mistake, not of villains” — the affective root sits on the mistake side of it.)

2. Firewall the specific mechanism from the general phenomenon. The “molecules of emotion” framing traces to Candace Pert, whose specific peptide–emotion claims drifted into contested territory. The general claim actually needed — that fear conditions early and shapes later interpretation of threat — is solidly supported (fear conditioning, developmental attachment, trauma literature) without her mechanism. Keep the insight; do not hang it on the contested biochemistry.

A marked seam (imported from the Purser source, not adopted)§

Purser’s paper carries its own unmarked is/ought joint. It slides from a defensible critique (endpoint/state-thinking discards trajectory information; real-time acceleration worsens it; control is fear-driven) into a contestable epistemology: that there is a “real future” knowable directly through intuition — “just-in-time knowledge that just arrives,” precognition, synchronicity. For a rational-agent grounding this is a non-starter; it smuggles in a faculty of acquaintance with the not-yet-existent.

Take the diagnosis; firewall the epistemology. What survives the firewall is already in this corpus, better grounded: distal sensing is the defensible residue of flow time. The field-fitness audit is explicit that early sensing handles the foreseeable and “cannot handle the genuine surprise.” Purser’s flow-time claims access to the unforeseeable by intuition. These are not the same competence, and ours is the sound one. Purser supplies the diagnosis of why control fails; distal sensing is the constructive answer, on firmer footing than he reaches.

Held tension (do not collapse)§

Reification and temporal control are operation and motive, not identity. Reification is the ontological operation (thing-for-relation). Temporal control is a motive that reaches for that operation and applies it to time. Keeping them distinct preserves two things worth keeping:

• not all reification is fear-driven (some is inherited convention);
• not all temporal control reifies.

Flattening them into one claim would buy a tidier thesis at the cost of both distinctions. Resist the closure.

Cross-links (why this note earns its place)§

• Money ontology — store-of-value = causal time on value; the reification four-step (reify → enclose → toll → invisibilize) gains a temporal reading: each step also detaches value from the flow of time.
• Governance-proposal analysis — debt as future-colonization / time-severance (Purser’s “extended present,” the future shrinking to a mere extension of the present; Graeber). The senior non-derived claim is itself a reification: a coordination relation frozen into a possessable senior asset. Treasury-growth is the activity mode (“if planning/technology are good enough, we dominate the future”) applied to the commons.
• Field-fitness / distal sensing — the rationally grounded competence Purser gropes toward.

Promotion condition (hub-inward)§

Promote from CANDIDATE toward hub status when: (a) the operation/motive distinction survives a deliberate attempt to collapse it; (b) the affective-root mechanism is restated without dependence on the contested Pert biochemistry and still explains recurrence; and (c) at least one governance artifact (proposal sort, amendment-weight reasoning) is demonstrably clarified by the temporal reading rather than merely decorated by it.

Finding status: CANDIDATE. The Levin (INM) paper is peripheral to this note and appears only via the operating-window convergence; its primary relevance lives in the separate, still-open membrane / semi-permeable-boundary thread.
